National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Today, Bellwoods honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities. We recognize the lasting harm caused by the residential school system and its continuing impact across generations of Indigenous Peoples. September 30 also marks Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led day of remembrance that affirms Every Child Matters.
As an organization supporting adults with physical disabilities to live independently in their communities, Bellwoods values dignity, inclusion, and belonging. These values call on us to reflect on the barriers Indigenous Peoples continue to face, including racism and inequities in access to housing, health care and community supports.
We still have much to learn. That starts with listening to Indigenous Peoples, understanding the history and lasting impacts of residential schools, and taking responsibility for how we treat and support people in our communities.
We encourage our staff, clients, volunteers and community partners to take time today to learn about residential school history, listen to Survivors’ experiences, and explore the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.
Our responsibility continues beyond September 30.
Every Child Matters.
